I’m Alex, the old time entertainment guy

I’m just into it - playing fiddle and banjo, dancing and calling squares and contras, telling stories with crankies, cooking tasty stuff in dutch ovens…all of it! I like these things because I think they make for meaningful experiences that connect me to other people. I think you’ll like them too, and I’d love to help make these experiences a reality for you.

I learned my fiddle playing initially from the Greg Canote, in a string band class in Seattle taught by Greg and Jere Canote, and Candy Goldman. I played my first square dance standing behind Greg and Jere, and I fell in love instantly. Pretty soon I was playing, dancing, then organizing square dances. Calling came next. I learned at Dare To Be Square West, from master callers like Bill Martin, Phil Jamisen, Bob Dalsemer, and Susan Michaels. I also learned from great pals and talented callers like Charmaine Slaven, Kelsey Nelsen, and Gabe Strand.

I’ve called dances in bars and barns, on boats and in fields, in churches, schools, libraries, museums, and even a horse arena, for big festivals and for friends in a dining room. My goal is to put a smile on your face, to make you laugh, to leave you surprised with how much fun you had.
